SoFi Underwriting Playbook

So you're applying to SoFi.

A deterministic, verified documentation checklist for anyone applying to a SoFi Personal Loan or Credit Card. Every rule here is taken directly from SoFi's published help center. No guesses, no fluff. Three income paths: self-employed, traditionally employed, and disability.

Confirm these three things first.

These apply to every applicant, regardless of income type. If any answer is "no," fix it before you touch the application.

Minimum credit score
700FICO
Floor for the SoFi Credit Card. Personal Loan approvals cluster at 680+, with most funded around 700+.
Identity
4 corners
Government-issued ID (DL or passport). Image must show "the four corners" per SoFi's upload rule.
Citizenship
US+
U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or non-permanent resident alien (incl. DACA, asylum seekers).

Three applicant profiles, three document sets.

Choose the path that matches how you earn. Each tab below shows exactly what SoFi will ask for, how to enter it on the application, and what will cause your file to get kicked back.

Self-Employed / 1099 Applicants

SoFi treats self-employment as a category, not a status. The document set depends on your entity type. Pick the row that matches how you file taxes, and gather those documents for the last two years.

"If you upload tax documents on or after April 15, you must provide tax returns for: the most recent completed year, and the year prior to that. Tax return extensions are not accepted. All submitted tax returns must already be filed with the IRS." — SoFi Support, April 2026

Documentation matrix (verbatim from SoFi)

Entity Type Required Documents
Sole Proprietor / Independent Contractor Last 2 years of filed 1040s + filed Schedule Cs
S-Corp Last 2 years of 1120-S K-1s. If you draw wages, also last 2 years of W-2s + 1125-E if applicable.
Partnership / Multi-member LLC Last 2 years of 1065 K-1s. Add 2 years of W-2s if you draw wages from the entity.
C-Corp, <25% ownership Most recent pay stub (treated as W-2 employee)
C-Corp, ≥25% ownership Last 2 years of 1120 + 2 years W-2s and/or 1099s + 1125-E + Schedule G
Non-Profit Officer / Director Last 2 years of Form 990 + most recent paystub + 2 years W-2s

Also be ready for

  • Last 3 months of bank statements (business AND personal). SoFi: "In some cases, you may also be asked to provide your last three bank statements to verify self-employment income."
  • All 1099s received in the last 2 years (NEC, MISC, K).
  • Government ID with all 4 corners visible.

Application entry rules

  • Check the Self-Employed box (not "Other"). SoFi's system routes you to the correct doc wizard based on this selection.
  • Enter your net self-employment income — Schedule C Line 31, or K-1 ordinary business income plus distributions. Never enter gross revenue.
  • If you receive an email from SoFi asking to clarify company ownership, respond within 48 hours. Slow responses expire the pre-approval.
Three things that kill self-employed applications:
01
Returns still in extension
On or after April 15, SoFi will not accept extended returns. File first.
02
Gross vs net mismatch
Stating gross revenue triggers a hard mismatch against Schedule C Line 31.
03
Co-mingled banking
Personal and business in one account is the #1 manual-review trigger.

Traditionally Employed (W-2)

If you receive a regular paycheck from one or more employers, this is your lane. The base documentation is lighter than self-employment, but supplementary income (bonus, commission, overtime) each has its own rule.

Core documents

  • Government ID with all 4 corners visible.
  • Most recent pay stub. This is the default wage-income document across every SoFi employment category.
  • SSN or ITIN.

Supplementary income (only if you want it counted)

Income Type What SoFi Requires
Bonus "At least a recent 2-year history of earning this income type, even if through different employers." Current pay stub + prior-year end-of-year stub. W-2 alone is not accepted — it doesn't separate earning types.
Commission "Recent 3-month history of earning this income type, even if through different employers." Current + end-of-year pay stubs. W-2 not accepted.
Overtime "Recent 3-month history of earning this wage type as it can vary." Most recent pay stub + prior-year end-of-year stub. W-2 not accepted.
Military Most recent pay stub. "May include base, BAS, BAH, and market pay. Combat and flight pay may also be acceptable."
Teacher / Educator Most recent pay stub. 2-year history. "Summer school pay and stipends related to athletics/coaching, band/music, or other extracurricular activities may also be included."
Multiple Jobs Most recent pay stub from each employer.

What happens if SoFi sends a VOE

If SoFi cannot auto-verify your employment, they email a Verification of Employment request. Per SoFi:

"We are only able to accept VOEs that are submitted directly to us by your employer." — SoFi Support, VOE article
  • Forward the email to your employer's HR or payroll team.
  • They return the completed form to employmentverification@sofi.com (or by fax).
  • If your employer uses a third-party service (Truework, The Work Number), contact SoFi to confirm the vendor.

The VOE form asks for: name, employer, title, date of hire, employee status (offer accepted / active / inactive), full-time vs. contract status, leave status, salary or pay-period frequency + hours + hourly rate.

Common W-2 application pitfalls:
01
Using W-2 for bonus/OT
SoFi explicitly does not accept W-2 for bonus, commission, or overtime because it doesn't separate earning types.
02
VOE sent by applicant
SoFi rejects VOEs submitted by the applicant. Must come directly from the employer.
03
Stating pre-tax gross incorrectly
Use gross annual income before tax from your most recent pay stub, not YTD.

Disability Income Applicants

SoFi explicitly accepts disability income. The exact document depends on whether the benefit is employer/insurer-paid or comes from the Social Security Administration.

"SoFi considers 'earned income' received on a recurring basis from a job, self-employment, Social Security, retirement, or other benefits." — SoFi Support, April 2026

Path A · Short or Long-Term Disability (private or employer-paid)

SoFi's stated requirement: "A copy of your disability policy or benefits statement (for the most recent month or quarter) from the benefits payer (insurance company, employer, or other qualified disinterested parties) that establishes:"

  • Your current eligibility for disability benefits.
  • The amount and frequency of your payments.
  • The duration payments will continue.

Path B · Social Security Disability (SSDI) or SSI

SoFi treats SSA-issued income under the Retirement row pattern. Bring all three:

  • Benefit Award Letter from the Social Security Administration. Download a current one from ssa.gov under "Benefit Verification Letter."
  • Most recent 1099-SSA tax form (SoFi's Retirement row specifies "Most recent 1099-R Tax form, or other documentation" — 1099-SSA is the equivalent for SSA-issued income).
  • Account statement for the most recent month or quarter showing the recurring deposit of your SSDI payment.

If you combine disability with other income

Stream Required
Pension / Retirement Award letter + most recent 1099-R + account statement for most recent month or quarter
401(k) distributions Eligible "if you are receiving regular verifiable disbursements." Provide distribution schedule + account statement.
Alimony / Child Support Divorce decree or court order showing income continues at least 3 years + 3 months of bank or DCSS statements proving receipt.
VOE note: If you are on long-term disability through an employer, HR or your benefits administrator can complete the VOE — you are still technically their employee of record during LTD. If you are on SSDI and not employed, the VOE process does not apply; the Award Letter + 1099-SSA + account statement is your full documentation set.
What triggers extra document requests for disability applicants:
01
Missing duration
Award letter doesn't state how long payments continue. Get a reissued letter that includes duration.
02
Stale statement
Benefits statement older than one quarter will be rejected. Pull a fresh one.
03
Deposit mismatch
Bank deposits don't match the stated benefit amount. Explain gaps in writing before upload.

Income SoFi will not count.

Deterministic exclusions published by SoFi. Listing any of these as income on your application triggers extra verification or an outright denial.

Not counted as earned income

  • Investment income. Dividends, capital gains, and brokerage distributions are explicitly excluded.
  • Savings. Cash in the bank is not income, regardless of balance.
  • One-time occurrences. Tax refunds, settlements, inheritance, gifts, gambling winnings, and bonuses that won't recur.
  • Any unverified source. If you cannot prove it with a SoFi-accepted document, do not list it.
Exception: 401(k) income may be eligible "if you are receiving regular verifiable disbursements" — confirmed by an account statement and distribution schedule.

Before you hit submit.

Run through this list in order the morning of your application. Skipping any item here is the most common cause of pre-approval reversal.

  • Credit score verified at 700 or higher (pull from SoFi Relay or your card dashboard).
  • Tax returns for last 2 years filed with the IRS — no extensions outstanding (self-employed only).
  • All income documents saved as clean PDFs with 4 corners visible.
  • Bank accounts separated (business vs. personal) with no NSFs or overdrafts in the last 90 days.
  • Income figure you plan to enter matches your tax return or pay stub exactly (net for self-employed, gross for W-2).
  • Phone and email are the ones SoFi should use to contact you for VOE and ownership-clarification emails.
  • 48 hours of availability to respond to any follow-up from SoFi's underwriting team.
  • Existing SoFi borrowers: confirm 3+ on-time payments on any current personal loan before applying for a new one.
